Feinstein was re-elected in 2018 and so won’t be up again until 2024, when she’ll be 91. It’s quite likely that she won’t ever face the voters again.

- napleon_pirb 7y agoYup, CA Senators are basically life time gigs. Feinstein is just following the same ruts in the road Boxer left. The Senators know that with The Bay and LA there is zero percent chance a Republican can take it and as long as they keep their donors happy, they figure they're impossible to primary and the reality is right now they're probably right. It's kind of why I support the run at Pelosi's seat. I don't exactly love Buttar, but having one of the OGs lose, or at least barely hold her seat, would probably do wonders to refocus various incumbents on what their constituents want.
- threatofrain 7y agoPelosi is exercising political leadership at the moment, and there doesn't seem to be anyone up for that level of high-stakes gambling. It may be bad leadership, but nobody has the guts to be up there right now. She is definitely punching above her station.
- ftio 7y agoAbove her station? She’s the Speaker. She’s one of the most powerful politicians in the country. She’s doing her job.
- threatofrain 7y agoWould her successor even be elected Speaker?
- olliej 7y agoMore or less all senators are lifetime appointments, which is part of the problem. But part of the reason that’s possible is because the various legislatures get to choose their own electorates, and the lack of run off elections when no one exceeds 50%
- TechBro8615 7y ago> More or less all senators are lifetime appointments Where are you getting this information? Senators serve six year terms and must be re-elected by their constituents.
- rwbhn 7y agoI believe the poster meant "effectively lifetime appointments". Some relevant stats: https://www.opensecrets.org/overview/reelect.php https://www.opensecrets.org/overview/reelect.php
