As you well know, it is very hard to get into the creative mode while also dealing with the arbitrary and stupid business rules.
There's a reason that people like Ken Thompson or John Tukey worked for companies.

What do you want? 2. Do you have a plan to get it? 3. Are you working regularly and consistently on that plan? If the answer is not "yes" to all three of those, luck is not going to find you.
