We're usually not very proactive though. Although we adapt and evolve it's usually as a reaction to pressure that can't be ignored, and by that time the cost is high if we do adapt and higher if we don't. For those who make it through, they'll be wiser and more prepared for similar situations - and their descendants may be too, at least for a while.
