My job has been inundated with applications from people who are not even in tech in any way (think like barbers & home depot workers). I see now why so many companies use automation to filter out resumes.
- whb07 7y agoTo what type of positions ? So like a barber for a random secretary or mail room etc? Or just all up and down the chain
- bearjaws 7y agoTo Software Engineer, lvl 3 support, Data Scientist, etc. Roles that they would almost certainly fail in without previous experience.
- dakna 7y agoOne of the requirements for unemployment benefits is that you are actually looking for work and can proof a certain number of applications per week. It makes sense to just randomly apply as long as the applications count towards the minimum number needed to stay eligible.
- bearjaws 7y agoI am aware of this, but that doesn't mean people should waste others time, and if it gets bad enough I am going to put automation in front of it. Everyone loses in these scenarios.
- whitebread 7y agoThis sounds like an unfortunate domino effect, where our legislation forces the unemployed to jump through ridiculous hoops, and in desperation to get $$ they start passing out resumes like hotcakes. To me they are a symptom of a broken system, and I want to direct my ire at the government rather than them.
- jeltz 7y agoIn Sweden we have temporarily removed this requirement during COVID-19, presumably to avoid swamping employers with pointless applications.
- thisone 7y agoDoes unemployment benefits still demand you apply for X number of jobs? Could be a cause.
- nkozyra 7y agoIf you're going to apply to something for which you have no experience, why not go big? CTO, CEO, VP of Bizdev?
- OrangeMango 7y agoEdit - covered by dakna below.
- boringg 7y agoAnd zip recruiter just laid off a bunch of employees...
- alephnan 7y agoOne of the requirements for unemployment is to show proof of actively applying for jobs. If workers are not interested in actually resuming work for the time being, they would apply jobs for which they would not qualify for, preferably ones that won’t even contact them back. This is a very cynical view, but could be a partial explaination.
- _curious_ 7y ago"If workers are not interested in actually resuming work for the time being, they would apply jobs for which they would not qualify for, preferably ones that won’t even contact them back." It's not cynical - it's real.

- scrooched_moose 7y agoI used to complain about automated job systems, then I saw a raw stack of applicants. In a good job market, roughly 90% don't get more than a few seconds - people not even remotely in the correct field for what they applied for. I can't imagine what it's going to be like for the next year or so.
- Meegul 7y agoI can attest to this. I got an application this week for my company's senior software engineer position from someone whose only experience has been in residential flooring. And dozens more with similar qualifications from all over the country despite it being an onsite position in Chicago.
