As an Android user that uses Dark Sky: Fuck you.
Everyone else is congratulating the team on a job well done, I'm not. I rely on Dark Sky because there are no better services, and it is a service I pay for.
Now I'm going to have to switch to some second rate weather app that can't predict the weather worth a damn because it just regurgitates the NWS.
God fucking damnit.
- jackklika 7y agoSame here. It's been the best weather app I've used. I'm not one to get pissed off like this on the internet but I'm heated! Is there any alternative?
- Yhippa 7y ago> Our goal has always been to provide the world with the best weather information possible, to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe, and to do so in a way that respects your privacy. But hey, they are looking out for us!
- beart 7y agoyes I agree. It may sound extreme but this small decision has actually turned me off from ever purchasing an apple product again (I do own an iPhone now but don't frequently use it. There is just no consumer friendly reason possible to shut the Android app off.
- saym 7y agoEspecially because it's not the default weather app on any Android device. Users have to seek it out. They're not punishing every android user, just the ones that have already supported the application they've purchased. It's spiteful.
- freedomben 7y agoWeather Timeline used to be awesome, but it used Dark Sky APIs and got shut down during this whole Apple acquisition thing. The app got acquired by MyRadar and they say it will be back using the MyRadar APIs, but will probably never be as good without the Dark Sky data behind it.
- djrogers 7y ago> Weather Timeline used to be awesome, but it used Dark Sky APIs and got shut down during this whole Apple acquisition thing. What? Was it shut down by the ‘acquisition thing’ that was announced today, or the API that Apple will be supporting for the next 18 months? I think you’re drawing conclusions not supported by anything.
- squaresmile 7y agoHis timeline is messed up. A year ago, Weather Timeline got pulled from the app store because sales wasn't covering the API cost. After a month or two, it got sold to the company that made MyRadar. https://www.reddit.com/r/androidapps/comments/9gti4r/rip_weather_timeline/ https://www.reddit.com/r/androidapps/comments/9gti4r/rip_wea... https://www.androidauthority.com/weather-timeline-android-new-944151/ https://www.androidauthority.com/weather-timeline-android-ne...
- freedomben 7y agoAh indeed, my mistake. It wasn't a result of this Apple thing after all. Thanks!
- MivLives 7y agoI had just switched in late last year after Weather Underground had gotten worse. Now I have to find another, or just hope that something is better then Weatherbug or whatever the top rated weather app is.
- dopamean 7y agoI'm with you 100% here. I'm very, very disappointed.
- dntbnmpls 7y agoYep, took me a while to find dark sky after weather underground. Now I'll have to find another. I'm starting to get real tired of the "get enough users then sell out" model. Wish more people would follow the craiglist model.
