Why would it be reasonable? If you're not willing to perform a job at the current pay grade, just quit your job. Either you get replaced immediately or you've got yourself a chip in your salary negotiation.
- rumanator 7y ago> Why would it be reasonable? If you're not willing to perform a job at the current pay grade, just quit your job. That is not an option for those living paycheck to paycheck, or not in the prime of their life. Human beings are not a resource, and managers need to understand that there is a social cost they pay and thus need to comply with a social contract.
- Kaiyou 7y agoIf you are living paycheck to paycheck and don't have enough funds to survive a year without positive cash flow, you yourself are to blame for your misfortune. If you got the money to buy a phone, you got enough income to save up and not saving up was a personal decision. You reap what you sow.
- habosa 7y agoSwitching jobs right now would cost you: a) Income you need to provide yourself food and shelter in a time of insecurity. b) Healthcare loss during one of the worst global health crises ever. The switching cost is near infinite and not reflected in the pay.
- Kaiyou 7y agoDoesn't everyone have enough in savings to survive a year without positive cash flow? If not, why not. Health care is tied to your job in the US? That's just crazy talk. (I believe you, but it's crazy from my perspective, which is someone living in the middle of Europe.)
- veggieburglar 7y agoThis might win the award for most out of touch comment today on HN. No, many people do not have enough in savings to survive a year without cash flow. I do not believe this is unique to the US. Yes, health care is largely tied to your job in America. Yes, it’s crazy talk.
- Kaiyou 7y agoIf you haven't saved enough money to survive for a year without income, you really only have yourself to blame. Just live a frugal life until you have saved enough. I lived my life frugal for so long, I don't even know how to spend the money I make. I've went years without buying stuff that isn't needed for survival and only spend money on shelter and food. If people can't do this simple thing, they can't expect pity from me.
- veggieburglar 7y agoGood for you. I doubt anyone is asking for your pity.
- Kaiyou 7y agoAs long as they also don't ask for my money (or tax money), I see no problem. People have to sleep in the bed they make.
