I once had a girlfriend whose mom would allow only positive things to be said. The children were all emotionally stunted to some degree and the whole family had this huge layer of dark feelings beneath the surface of perfect happiness. Extreme positivity is just another form of control and oppression.
- mistermann 7y agoIt can be a form of control and oppression, but is it always? And, is that all ("just") it is?
- bigDinosaur 7y agoYes.
- mistermann 7y agoI was not aware of this, but this sort of thing is one of my personal interests. If you don't mind me asking, where did you learn the answer to that question?

- DonHopkins 7y agoApparently he does mind you asking, and so do a lot of other people, since nobody replied. Your "positive attitude" is toxic, because you're still sealioning, a technique you learned from Gamergate and brought here, where it's inappropriate and unwelcome, and which you have been repeatedly been warned NOT to do, but in spite of which you relentlessly continue to do, and for which your posts have been repeatedly flagged and deeply downvoted and frequently even killed and hidden, and because of which your account is well on its way to being banned. Give it a break. Stop posting generic content-free comment spam like that, which look like you copied and pasted them out of a table in the appendix of "Sealioning for Dummies", and bear absolutely no relationship to the topic being discussed, and have no positive impact of the conversation. And remember it will be easy to recognize you, and we will be on the lookout for you (plus the management has countermeasures in place that will detect you instantly), if you create a new sock puppet account, and continue sealioning after you're banned. https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Just_asking_questions#Sealioning https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Just_asking_questions#Sealioni... Sealioning involves jumping into a conversation with endless polite, reasonable questions and demands for answers, usually of entry-level topics far below the actual conversation (e.g. "please prove sexism exists"). This tactic differs little from harassment; instead of discussion, the point is to derail discussion, receive criticism (for their ignorance) so as to look like a victim, or to make someone feel overwhelmed and quit talking. It is comparable to running a filibuster (or perhaps a filibustering technique) and preventing anything getting done. The nature of Twitter makes it particularly easy to sealion -- since everything is extremely compressed. A particularly toxic thing about sealioning is that people who are genuine newbies asking serious questions are easy to mistake for sealions. The term originally gained prominence for describing the Gamergate strategy of flooding people with a barrage of demands for proof that Gamergate was harassing people.
- RoseCrypto 7y agoThis post might be one of the most insane things I've seen written on a forum in my entire life. Take a deep breath, man.
- DonHopkins 7y agoWelcome to Hacker News, and congratulations on making your very first post ever! You can start by reading misterman's posting history to familiarize yourself with what "sealioning" is (although you may need to set "show dead" in your profile to even see all the worst ones that have been downvoted, flagged, and killed), and refrain from doing it yourself, please. I'm sure your entire life will be more interesting and less sheltered after you have had the opportunity to read all the insane things than mistermann has written, and feel free to read my posting history for much more insanity. But I'm not holding my breath, so don't worry about me.
- RoseCrypto 7y agoThanks. I've had this account for awhile - was planning on discussing and maybe posting some articles about cryptocurrency. Your wacky screed is the first thing that actually motivated me to reply, though. Re: that guy's posting history: no thanks. I don't really care. All I saw is this exchange, and in it you blow up over something that is pretty innocuous. I'm just trying to let you know that you're coming across like a wild-eyed political extremist with a bone to pick here. I mean, GamerGate? I was just trying to google "posiopathy" to learn more about it, and instead I find you ranting and raving about some political thing from over half a decade ago. All because - as far as I can tell - some guy asked a couple questions in a way you didn't like. It's completely bizarre. I'm not going to accuse you of being schizophrenic because that would be rude, but I will admit that it's the first thing that came to mind when I read that post.

- danielmg 7y agoMy wife is just like that. She can't deal with conflict or opposing views. Her mother and father are limited imitations of human personalities. Somehow we get on together but our families are so different. In her family emotions outside of an accepted range are verboten. Growing up in my family was the exact opposite and emotion ruled everything. Neither are healthy.
- verylittlemeat 7y agoIt's definitely a form of control. I know that we're all fucked up in the head in our own special ways but one side of my family has the "positivity" problem. It leads to really intense passive aggressive powderkeg. The problem is the positive person is usually delusional and convinced to the bone their way is correct. There is very little introspection there. Usually when the positive person is in a situation where they're forced to be "negative" or defensive you see some of the nastiest most vindictive behavior.
- Ididntdothis 7y ago“I know that we're all fucked up in the head in our own special ways “ So true.
