There’s a lot of comments on this thread, and I apologize if I’m saying anything that’s been said multiple times already. I would say that HN is the healthiest comment driven site I’ve been part of in the 27 years I’ve been on the internet. It’s big, and still doesn’t succumb to the trolls who tend to be the biggest problem on anonymous comment threads. There are a few rules here that are pretty well policed, bit I think the single most important one is to read and respond to comments in the most positive light possible. It keeps threads civil, and tends to starve the trolls. It also helps that we have very good moderators. I will say that it feels it feels like the heart of what made HN isn’t as apparent anymore. Many of the strong core that was here isn’t as prevalent anymore, but despite this, and it’s seeming growth it still hasn’t succumbed to the poor behavior of a minority of users that tend to disrupt and subvert communities like this after a surprisingly short amount of time. I keep coming back because the comments tend to have good gems, and a good take on the main article, without having to deal with most of the vitriol of most comment sections.
