Ask HN: Why are there no old-Skype like messaging systems?
Time might be making my memories nice and cushy about the old Skype - until 2.2 on Linux -, than it really was, but as far as I can recall, it had everything we needed in ~2009: ad-hoc groups, working video and audio, inbound phone number, p2p (over the local LAN is was full speed to send files from one to another).
I know it lacked e2e encryption.
I've found a few articles on reverse engineering the Skype protocol, like http://www.oklabs.net/category/skype-reverse/ so I'm asking the question: why was it not rebuilt or something similar built?
