AirBnb forces you to agree permanently to automatic withdrawals If you ever book using PayPal. Yesterday I noticed they had randomly withdrawn over $500 from my PayPal account over the past two weeks. I haven’t booked a stay with AirBnb for months, and their support refuses to acknowledge that it happened and doesn’t answer any questions. How convenient that this “mistake” happened just as they are running out of money. I wonder how many other people have experienced this “mistake” from AirBnb recently.
- osrec 7y agoWow, that's crazy. Are you still unable to get your money back?
- FriendlyNormie 7y agoIn the latest response from the “AirBnb Trust & Safety Team”, they claimed that they looked into the issue and determined that my family member used my credit card unintentionally. The problem there is that I’ve never used a credit card with AirBnb, I’ve never given anyone else access to my AirBnb account, and the money was withdrawn directly from my PayPal account which has nothing to do with a credit card. Every time I contact AirBnb, they pretend to investigate it, wait a few hours, send me a random automated email unrelated to my complaint, and close the ticket. They still have my money. Edit: To the AirBnb team members who are getting paid to downvote me, why don’t you help push to get this resolved instead? It would be a shame if I blogged about this and linked directly to the blog with a full page interstitial ad on the Alexa 3000 website I personally own and control.
- ornornor 7y agoAt that point wouldn’t it be easier to ask PayPal to intervene and/or chargeback through your credit card? Plus it will sting more for Airbnb which it looks like you feel they’d deserve it.
- FriendlyNormie 7y agoIt was withdrawn from my PayPal balance. At no point was a credit card involved with AirBnb or PayPal. PayPal does not allow me to dispute the four individual transactions which added up to over $500, they only let me dispute the original billing agreement with AirBnb which was essentially “you agree to let AirBnb take however much money from your balance they want, whenever they want, forever, because they totes won’t abuse this feature to rob you someday months later out of the blue.” Which they did.
- lonelappde 7y agoIf they did that on purpose at scale, as opposed to billing the wrong customer for an order, I promise that it won't save them. That's a slam dunk FTC/class action settlement. Anyway, seems like your real problem is leaving your money with PayPal to give away to however they see fit, instead of using a legitimate bank with credit/debit card protections.
- dang 7y agoThere's no evidence that "Airbnb team members" downvoted you, and it breaks the site guidelines to post such insinuations. Please review https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html and stick to the rules when commenting here.
