I've been visiting HN (many years) and mostly enjoy it. The difficult thing for me is how hard it is to post anything and have it stay in the headlines long enough to have anyone give you feedback. Very easy to add comments though. So guess what? You end up with a lot of 'noise' in the comments and very little 'signal' elsewhere. I don't have a proper 'solution' and maybe HN is just perfect the way it is, flaws and all.
