    It sounds more like exercising reasonable judgement without a codified standard for behavior, the way most things in the real world work. Do purple-hairs really run every single comment on the internet through a code of conduct evaluation, or is it (predictably) only used to bully less sensitive people into caring about their cause(s)?

  If one person thinks something is fine and someone else thinks it isn't you get disagreements and arguments based on misunderstandings and assumptions. IMO outlining what is "professional" and what isn't in a CoC solves that issue.
