This seems like a somewhat similar idea to the USB Bit Whacker -- UBW <http://www.schmalzhaus.com/UBW/index.html> http://www.schmalzhaus.com/UBW/index.html>. The original UBW used a PIC 18F2550 directly connected to USB.
