This is beautiful, and I'm a photography buff, but how does this have anything to do with startups or hacking?

I guess sometimes we get caught up sitting at our desk, hacking around and forget to appreciate the world beyond the internet?

I personally always make exceptions for the cosmos. Nearly everyone here spends all their time and their money and their whole lives dedicated to machines, to computers, to glowing rectangles. It's very good to sit back - even if you're still looking at the computer - and remember what's out there.

Frankly, anything that causes one to give pause and ponder the universe has at least some intrinsic intellectual -- or more accurately, perhaps, philosophical -- value. And that, beyond mere tech, startups, and hacking, is one of the driving factors behind the HN community, as the reader feedback to this link clearly demonstrates.

On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity. http://ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html http://ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

While I agree with you, I think it's due to submissions such as this that end up leading to things like the recent submission "Solving the Hacker News Problem" http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2252152 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2252152

Many of these awesome time lapse sequences are shot with hacked Canon cameras running custom firmware. http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_Lantern_Firmware_Wiki http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_Lantern_Firmware_Wi... http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK
