The real 'hack' is to subscribe to Google Play Music All Access. A music streaming service that rivals Spotify, and comes with YouTube Premium (and YT Music) bundled in.

What's the library like - if I pick a random artist that has < 50000 monthly listeners on spotify how likely is google play music to have them too?

Google Play Music has 40m tracks to Spotify's 50m, but you can upload your own music to fill in any gaps.

It’s more or less the same catalog.

In my country that's not the case, subscribing to Google Play Music does not grant access to YouTube Premium. Also the "Google Play Music All Access" is 4.90 USD and YouTube Premium is 5.80 USD, not much of a difference. Also a family pack for Play Music isn't available. And the Family Pack (5 members) for YouTube Premium is 8.69 USD, which is what I'm on and all slots are occupied, so it's obviously a better deal.
