Which experts exactly?
- bdcravens 7y agoDr. Fauci, for instance. He hasn't wavered on the need for social distancing.
- klmadfejno 7y agoIs Dr. Fauci an expert in economics? Can he accurately measure the harm of his suggestions?
- bdcravens 7y agoI suspect he's better at economics than an entrepreneur with multiple failed businesses and four bankruptcies.
- jjeaff 7y agoI'm seeing lots of experts talking about the potential deaths if we don't shut down. I'm not seeing a lot of experts giving estimates of the ramifications of economic fallout here. Just politicians worried about their reelection and business people worried about their personal fortune. I'm sure they are out there. But right now they are overshadowed by professional doofs like Larry Ludlow.
- m0zg 7y agoAre you seeing experts estimating the number of deaths caused by the economic damage? Because the rate of suicide does tick up when there's economic downturn. I would not be surprised if, at the tail end of this, the downturn causes more deaths in the sub-50 y.o. group due to suicide than due to the virus. Besides, are experts estimating whether or not it will be easier to deal with the epidemic with an economy that functions or the one that's almost totally shut down, causing supply chain disruption and delays worldwide, and (in a month or two) shortages of goods?
- TomMckenny 7y agoThe suicide claim is just cynical cover for and a plan that will sacrifice lives for money. Lack of medical coverage, homelessness, inadequate social safety net etc cause even more suicide yet there is no concern about those things. Indeed the administration has never expressed any concern for suicide or even mental health before. A recession will hurt Trumps re-election chances and social distancing is losing money for The wealthy in generally and Trump in particular. Yet this could all have been avoided if test kit production had been ramped up in early days: South Korea and the US got their first case on the same day. But S. Korea took action while the Trump administration did nothing except claim news about the virus was fake. It is a remarkable combination of incompetence exacerbated by malice.
- m0zg 7y ago> A recession will hurt Trumps re-election chances The DNC is nominating an establishment guy _with dementia_ who sniffs people without their consent, talks about kids rubbing hair on his legs, and walks off screen during live broadcasts. I don't think an asteroid crashing into Earth would be able to hurt Trump's election chances at this point. > Trump administration did nothing except claim news about the virus was fake Verifiably not true. The Trump administration has set up the task force on Jan 29 (a few days after the first case was identified) and shut down flights from China 3 days later, and from Europe shortly afterwards, all while you were howling about Ukraine and impeachment.
