I wrote this filter for Pandoc once that allowed you to execute Python from within cells and replace the cell content with the results. It also used row names as variable names. Sadly, I can't find the markdown file that actually uses it and I also can't remember how it worked. But the point is: you can do it (badly, but working) in ~100 of Python code as a plugin for Pandoc.
