Ask HN: Introduction to FEM/FEA for a computer scientist
Hello everyone,
I'm a computer scientist working as a full-time programmer on the development of a Finite Element Analysis solver. I am only dealing with the low-level/programming aspects of the solver, such as performance, parallelism, IO, etc. No understanding of the FEM model or the maths behind it is required by my supervisors.
However I want to learn a bit about the FEM/FEA to have a better understanding of the product at high level. Ideally, I would like to even program the simplest form of a FEA solver, e.g. reading a sample file with maybe grids / elements / loads / boundary conditions, and computing displacements or stresses.
Could you please recommend a gentle introduction to FEM/FEA for a programmer, which does not require deep understanding of the underlying maths? I'm mostly interested in the "algorithmic" aspects of the domain: the workflow of solving, the various steps, how the overall method works etc. Online videos (Udemy, Coursera, Pluralsight), chapters from books (ideally that can be found online), articles, repositories, anything is welcome.
Thanks a lot, stay safe.
