While agree that most of these are highly invasive and certainly not a requirement, the Visibility API is actually a good thing. Apps which are running continuous scripts, like games, etc, may and should detect, when they are hidden (i.e. the tab they are in isn't the front most one) and pause. This is explicitely meant to preserve resources on the client machine and to benefit the user. On the other hand, there isn't much to gain from on the app's side, beyond receiving a notification to wake up and to possibly check for any updates that happened in the meantime to be applied.
- megablast 7y agoI don't agree, I leave a video on, switch tabs to read something else, and now it stops. There is no way to get it to keep playing and switch tabs.
- masswerk 7y agoJust open a new window and leave the tab with the video on top of that window. (It hasn't to be always tabs only.)
- Nursie 7y agoDoesn't work on mobiles.
- masswerk 7y agoThen you are doomed. ;-) (On mobile, it's your browser anyway that mutes any not currently on top and visible web sources, without any "help" by the particular website.)
- Nursie 7y agoI know this is an old topic now, but that's not true. I've installed a firefox plugin that disables the visibility API. Result - now youtube in a firefox tab keeps playing even with my screen locked. It is most definitely the page doing the muting.
- Nursie 7y agoFYI there is a firefox addon to block the visibility API I can now listen to the UK PM's coronavirus update on my phone with the screen locked, or while looking up something else. Whoever invented that API forgot whose client the browser is. Mine.
- Nursie 7y agoGod no, sites shouldn't be told whether I'm looking at them or not.
