I try to use referrals whenever I can. A few years ago got one which lead to two on-site interviews. Lately though people have been giving me the cold shoulder on LinkedIn or email, understandably they are tired of being pestered about jobs. I don't socialize often to begin with but I always separate people into "family or friend" or "professional" buckets, never mixing the two.
