I'd happily do away with web browsers and use only native programs for each site I usually visit. For instance, when I still used reddit, I did through a fantastic command-line program called rtv [0]. I'd most definitely use something similar for HN, or any other platform--Wikipedia, for example, or ArtWiki, or MUBI. We certainly don't need a web browser as it is conceived today.

- shadowgovt 7y agoSo you'd happily do away with web browsers and use shell apps instead. rtv is still a hosted app; it's hosted in a command-line interface with command-line rules instead of an HTML-rendering interface with w3c standardized rules. Take away the shell, and rtv won't run any more than a web page "runs" without a browser to interpret it. But these things aren't quite so different as one may imagine (the capability set of one is much broader; the compatibility set of the other is probably much broader).
- plop_ 7y agoYou might be interested in weboob then. I am not using it, but I know they provide lots of small apps to access different websites. ttps://weboob.org/
- mschuetz 7y agoModern web browsers are the single best thing for security. I'm not going to install hundreds of apps from hundreds of sources.
