Good. I'm hoping this will hurry along Dell's new XPS 13 Developer Edition configs with 32 GB of mem, 1080 display (I prefer battery over 4K) and linux. I have been itching to throw money at Dell since that was announced in January and here we are. Granted, the pandemic obviously hit their supply chain so I can understand.
- nfoz 7y agoIf you like the XPS 13, I also recommend to look out for their "business laptop" Latitude 7xxx series (12", 13", 14"). They tend to have more ports, physical buttons on the touchpad, and slightly better keyboards. YMMV
- acidburnNSA 7y agoNice. Thanks. I do indeed want more ports than the current new XPS 13s. Looks like they come at a premium. 8th-Gen CPUs (vs. 10th in new XPS) with a few more ports for an extra few hundred bucks? I will keep looking though for their latest model. Thanks again.
- nfoz 7y agoNo prob. Another option for ultraportable with good ports, 10gen cpu and touchpad buttons (my personal obsession lol) is the Vaio: https://us.vaio.com https://us.vaio.com It's pricey but their SX14 is almost surely my next laptop. I'd buy one but they don't sell directly to Canada, and -- as of the border closure this morning -- I couldn't even go to the US to get one if I wanted to! Crazy times indeed.
- ohitsdom 7y agoGood tip, the latest Vaios do look nice. But it's very weird to see a VGA port on a modern laptop!
- acidburnNSA 7y agoI'm trying to upgrade from a 2013 VAIO which I totally love so that's also a good tip. Crazy times indeed.
- alexhutcheson 7y agoeBay is full of cheap refurbished Latitudes, because businesses are constantly replacing them with something newer.
- raghava 7y agoBe warned about the whole DisplayLink display driver drama though. Go for one with ports doing both Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C. Docks that use DisplayLink drivers for video are absolute junk on Windows and Linux both. Am actually switching to an older 5450 to get back the ease of having dual displays over a PRO3X dock at desk and a whole host of peripherals (keyboard, mouse etc)
- showerst 7y agoNot sure if it fits your requirements, but i've been very happy with my System76 Darter Pro with those stats.
- acidburnNSA 7y agoThat would probably be ok. What kind of battery life are you getting? That's my biggest concern with the system76 machines.
- showerst 7y ago(2019 darter pro) 4-6 hours of web browsing/vscode + light docker, depends a bit on what all i'm running. That's been fine for me but I wouldn't get it if you're in a scenario when you're generally unplugged for a whole work day / international flight. FWIW I left a more in depth review on reddit when I got it - https://www.reddit.com/r/System76/comments/bezy1w/2019_darter_pro_review/ https://www.reddit.com/r/System76/comments/bezy1w/2019_darte...
- acidburnNSA 7y ago4-6 hours would be doable. Thanks! I kind of wanted to stay on the 13-14" side but this looks like a nice machine. The smaller sys76 just have too small of a battery for me. Sounds like you had the same concern. Oh damn check out this recent announcement! https://system76.com/laptops/lemur https://system76.com/laptops/lemur That's what I'm talking about!
