I don't think it would be better to have a worse camera. You can't fit much camera at all in 5.9mm anyways, and cameras are useful. What would be better is if the whole thing were as thick as required by the camera module - a "whopping" 8mm or so. You could use this difference to make it stiffer and more durable (it's going to be uncomfortably weak to hold at 5.9mm), to add more battery capacity, or to improve the thermal performance.
