If you really want control, look at the Matrix ecosystem. The server (Synapse) can be self-hosted and you can easily turn off or limit federation if you don't want the ability to talk with other instances.
Its completely open source and very easy to setup imo. And, the entire French government trusts it and uses it for day to day work, so its not going to be abandoned any time soon.

- pikurov 7y agoThanks, but I am not a big fan of open source products :)
- tastroder 7y agoWhy would you when your account exclusively posts what I assume are ads? The only thing remotely related to security on that page is that you use TLS in a client/server setting. That's not remotely better than what the person you're replying to suggested, which is also 100 times less suspicious looking than a random landing page with generic looking icons.
- DarkStar851 7y agoJeez, all of their posts are ads for this nsoft crap. Is this allowed on HN? Not sure how to alert a moderator.

- dsr_ 7y agoWe might have gone with Matrix if it had been a little more polished when we were looking for a replacement for XMPP. Instead we ended up with Zulip, which is very nice for an entirely in-company chat system. If you want UI polish, Zulip is still ahead. If you want federation and interoperability, Matrix is a strong contender.
