Well, I can see that I am outgunned as far as advanced networking knowledge goes. I would just like to say that I did a head to head comparison between openvpn and wireguard using the same hardware, server and client endpoints. Connection from Montreal to Amsterdam. Result was that something like this: novpn=100% wireguard=95% speed, openvpn=25% speed. Enough to convince me that for my use case (simple, steady point to point) wireguard is very much the superior option.
