No. It’s a low bandwidth communication medium which, because it is asynchronous, allows for more calculated choice of presentation (eg, Instagram).

  I had irc and reddit in mind, not social networks with images though

    It's still the same, and also much harder to tell when people leave the conversation if they do so without interaction clues.
