I don't think that's a helpful way of looking at things. Presidents who go to war generally don't lose elections because Presidents generally don't choose to get into unpopular wars. But there are exceptions - that's how we got Nixon, Obama campaigned against McCain's Iraq support. I think it will be far more important how Trump deals with this than the simple fact of it happening.
