One thing I don’t see mentioned here is the out of control compensation Airbnb has had for engineers. As an engineer I love to see companies pay more, but Airbnb has been beating Facebook offers when they really don’t need to. Companies like this are not rocket science. I get that the website is just the top of the iceberg, but all those massive stock grants and base salaries are going to haunt them.
- analyst74 7y agoNot all startups are the same, but for companies that are bottom driven and growing crazy, the skill, leadership, business sense, and amount of care needed at IC level is unfathomable for someone who works at a more traditionally managed company. If they skimp on salary it'll be extremely difficult to attract the kind of people they need.
- corporateslave5 7y agoMaybe, but my point was that Airbnb is not one of those companies. Everyone I’ve met working there says they do run of the mill web dev. Those same engineers are making in excess of 450k, and are barely 30. Airbnb got into some prestige employee game and hurt themselves doing it.
- onlyrealcuzzo 7y agoThey're beating Facebook offers with non-liquid stock. Tbd if they're really beating FB offers.
- corporateslave5 7y agoSure but now there’s pressure for them to ipo because all of their employees have been stacking paper money for years. Just issuing massive grants doesn’t work forever, there are consequences once a company leaves the early stages.
