Everything in Tokyo is tiny. My dad, my wife and I stayed at a reasonably nice hotel there ($250/night) and the situation was basically how you're describing your Airbnb -- bedroom that's completely taken up by the beds, and a bathroom you can barely turn around in. Kyoto, Hiroshima, etc. are a different story. But Tokyo is pretty much the most cramped place I've ever visited, both indoors and out.
