Coronavirus: Trump halts travel from Europe to US
- ericb 7y agoGiven how bad our plan for the coronavirus is, Trump may yet succeed in getting Mexico to build a wall and pay for it.
- shawnb576 7y ago^ underrated comment ^
- ridings 7y agoAnyone smart enough to help me understand why UK would be exempt?
- DrStalker 7y agoSomeone told Trump they left the EU so in his mind they aren't part of Europe anymore.
- Leary 7y ago"Special Relationship" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Relationship https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Relationship
- alamortsubite 7y agoI'm not claiming smarts but my guess is it's purely a diplomatic gesture.
- fotbr 7y agoBecause Boris is UK-Trump? (said only semi-seriously, I don't follow UK politics close enough to know for sure how good the comparison is) I suspect it's a matter of the "special relationship" the US and UK have had for decades; Trump doesn't want to be seen as the one throwing our UK friends under the bus, especially with the promises he made during the lead-up to and implementation of Brexit.
- balola 7y agoPresumably it's an English speaking country with tighter ties.
- sidibe 7y agoIDK, but at this point its all pretty arbitrary however they do it since it seems to be spreading in some parts of the USA pretty well already. I guess less travel, whether it's EU, UK or even domestic, is better, but where from doesn't really matter as much anymore so Trump picked some for political purpose.
- hatenberg 7y agoBecause they dont inconvenience people with Temperature checks on arrival- even from Milan.
- polski-g 7y agoThey're not in the Schengen zone, so they can control who comes in?
- jacquesm 7y agoSo, does that mean that you can fly to London first and then on to the USA?
- pintxo 7y agoAs I understood it: No. > His speech said all travel from Europe would be suspended but a presidential proclamation later said it would only apply to anyone who had been in the EU's Schengen border-free area in the 14 days before their arrival in the US. You been in (Schengen) Europe the last 14 days? And not being an exempted person (eg US citizen/resident)? Then you are not going. You could probably go to London, stay there 14 days and then go on. Problem is, in 2 weeks time, travel will likely be farther restricted.
- lostmsu 7y agoWhat is the point? There are more cases in Seattle area than in majority of European countries with a similar population.
- rejschaap 7y agoProtectionism, trade war, patriotism, elections, nationalism... Pretty much everything except health
