Ask HN: I want to do physics experiments and I have a Master's in Math

I have a Msc. in Math from DePaul University and I want to learn how people go from observations to theories. The problem is that there's no entry point: it seems the most basic of entrypoints require you be training since High School. That kind of competitiveness is not fair. Where can I find positions for research assistants that are open to people who aren't prepared like others, or who have an atypical background?
