This is legal slave labour.
- forkexec 7y agoThe 13th amendment loophole expressly permits slavery of prisoners. 13 a never ended the practice, it just hid it from the public and claimed to end it. And Lincoln is an overly-lionized figure that the vast majority of people are brainwashed to ignore the facts because of a totem fetish. Prisons are the modern plantations and corporations are the plantation owners.
- gowld 7y agoCan a "loophole" be "expressly"? It's not a trick, it's a straightforward statement of the author's intent. It's a loophole that permits slavery of non-prisoners by virtue of a corrupt prosecution and jail system that puts people in prison for longer than they deserve and then extends their sentences unreasonably for in-prison violations, allowing slave labor dor the duration of their excessive imprisonment. Most modern prison labor isn't even "slavery" under the 13th. It's using a different loophole -- indentured servitude to reduce inflated sentences, and offering monopsonistically-suppressed wages and monopolistic "company town" prices for basic living supplies.
- nitwit005 7y agoDoing labor for the community is a feature of almost every system of criminal punishment. It at least sounds more enjoyable than traditional prison labor like breaking rocks for construction projects 10 hours a day, and the injuries that tended to go along with that.
- gowld 7y agoIt needs to be considered in context -- Do the prisoners even get access to the value thet create for community? Are the prisoners serving sentences that are no longer than is just?
- kdtsh 7y agoYou may be absolutely correct and it would still be legal slavery. This is also generally not labour for the community in the general sense - there is an entity drawing a profit from prison labour (the state if it’s a publicly owned prison, or the prison owners if it’s privately owned). What you describe would be community service, which you may be able to argue is not slavery (and I would say is also an acceptable form of punishment for some crimes if it reduces recidivism).
- nitwit005 7y agoMandatory community service is slavery if prison labor is. People aren't doing it willingly.
