Such a shame that this conversation is always so one sided because the 'other' side is not vocal or portrayed clearly in the media.
There is a controlled middle ground where the alternative to end to end encryption isn't a full surveillance state but gives safety and protection to society at the expense of trusting the other side with some of our information.
The majority?? of people want govts/intelligence to monitor, detect and pre-emptively manage:
Terrorism plots
Paedophiles
Large scale criminals - drugs, human trafficking etc.
Kidnapping
Lost person location
Rescue coordination
If that cannot be done without viewing content (and I'm not sure that statement is true) then personally I'm ok to trade some of my theoretical privacy for the security.
Let's face it, how likely is it that the other side would be interested in my cat video content?
But also don't be fooled that encrypted content means your privacy is secure.
Just knowing when and to whom messages are sent is a powerful tool already and not something easily protected.
App providers already use this in surveillance capitalism used by the likes of Facebook, Google etc.
