There was a great scene in a sci-fi story from decades ago... Aliens came. A farmer, hiding in his barn, saw them snooping around. They came across a rattlesnake and were about to blast it. This -- the threat to the snake -- emboldened the farmer to get his shotgun and go out and confront the aliens. The gist was that the snake and he were on the same side vis-a-vis the aliens... they were both Earthlings and needed to stick up for one another.
