Afaik on android they require you to grant the app the full contacts access permission to be able to use it. At least that was the case a year ago.

- jotm 7y agoNot for Xiaomi specifically, but I remember allowing some apps all the permissions they needed... then blocking some of them from settings somewhere, and they worked fine (for my needs). Haven't had the need to do that in the past couple of years, I hope that's still possible.
