Stop buying smart home shit.
People warned of exactly this when they started.
- nicolaslem 7y ago...and if you do, make sure to buy things that are offline first.
- p_l 7y agoLike Philips Hue v1? :) Well, "local net" first, it originally had no "cloud" support.
- swiley 7y agoSmart isn’t the bad part, it’s closed source firmware that causes these (and other) problems.
- orev 7y agoNo, it’s the insistence on using the Cloud for things that could easily be done on-premises.
- true_religion 7y agoFunny enough the v1 bridge that is being shutdown, allows for on premises access and cloud services like HomeKit have never worked.
- drdaeman 7y agoBut those bridges are exactly that, aren't they? They're locally running servers, doing all things on premises. My only issue with Philips is that I'd love to have an SDK to run my own code on the bridge (which is possible, though, but in unofficial way). I guess if all this third-party stuff in the cloud (which are going to break because of the API shutdown = external connectivity/tunnel shutdown) would be apps, downloadable to the bridge instead, things would be better...
- fmakunbound 7y agoThis. Fuck all this basic technology redesigned with Internet functionality. This bulb has been going for longer than people live http://centennialbulb.org/ http://centennialbulb.org/ but if it were connected to Philips' bullshit, it'd have been dead dozens of times over. It's not the light bulb's API versioning that's the problem - it's that the fucking bulb has an internet connected API in the first place.
