This would save your acquaintance the effort of applying for a job, and instead they could either not work (Sure, fine I guess) or focus on something else full time instead of the cycle of unemployment. UBI might actually reduce their cost to society since stringent auditing / compliance / processing for unemployment would not be required. No more in-person filing and check-ins, etc.
