RSS the protocol, or RSS the experience?
The Protocol is alive and kicking, as far as being available, but it's been more or less killed by publishers not promoting it out of the box. AFAIK ad revenue is basically the reason.
The replacement set of broadcast tools is still Facebook, Twitter, Direct, and Newsletters. Newsletters are really the new feed.
- pavel_lishin 7y ago> Newsletters are really the new feed. I've noticed this as well, and it boggles my mind. If ever there was a use case for RSS, this would be it.
- nickthegreek 7y agoInoreader just rolled out a new feature that allows you to subscribe to newsletters directly in their reader and have them available with the rest of your feeds.
- panzerboy 7y agoFeedbin does it as well.
- Animats 7y agoWith RSS, the user is in control. Unsubscribe, and it's gone. "Newsletters", which are mostly ads, are much harder to stop. Hence the demand for MailChump, Constant Spammer, and SpamBlast.
- worble 7y ago>Newsletters are really the new feed Nearly every newsletter I follow also provides an RSS feed though.
- scarface74 7y agoI have yet to find a website that I feel should have an RSS feed that doesn’t have one.
- robobro 7y agoTwitter
- romdev 7y agoMy only interface to Twitter is through Newsblur and https://twitrss.me https://twitrss.me
- rapnie 7y agoFor me https://nitter.net/ https://nitter.net/ directly, but I'll add an rss interface too. Thx for the link.
- jamie-vesoft 7y agoNice to know the site. I found Hootsuite is also a nice place to manage a Twitter handle.
- timbit42 7y agoThe Globe & Mail shut down their RSS feed a while ago. They're dead to me now.
- 52-6F-62 7y agoWhoa they did? I haven’t been using RSS as much lately but I’ve been reading less news. I wonder if it’s because they hardened their paywall. That’s disappointing. For a while they were the most forward Canadian paper, digitally.
- sys_64738 7y agoIf a webpage publishes discreet articles then it should do RSS. Any site I go to has to have RSS for me or I stop visiting. My time is important.
