"It's not built for synchronous communication the way emails and documentation tools are." That seems exactly backwards - email works well asynchronously, Slack demands immediate attention. I can check email a few times per day. On Slack, the best you can do is shut off notifications for a while to make some space to not be interrupted. In my (recent) experience, people expect an answer to an email within 24 hours, they expect a response to a Slack message immediately.
