Could you imagine life prior to widely available HVAC? These cramped streets, heaving with people and heat. It's all the more remarkable given the sartorial expectation of the time. How did people wear suits and dense dresses regularly?
- JoeAltmaier 7y agoPlenty of the world doesn't live with HVAC even today. They mostly do fine. But agree on the suit deal - How do they stand it? The Amish in Iowa today wear wool even in the hottest weather. Nuts to that.
- ceejayoz 7y agoI'd imagine you get used to it after a while. When it's 50 degrees in September, people here in upstate NY put on gloves. When it's 50 degrees in April, they wear shorts.
- stainforth 7y agoSeersucker material apparently? Although I haven't seen that during the summer people exclusively wore seersucker suits.
- throwsprtsdy 7y agoThere were non-air-conditioned subway trains in New York City well into the 1980s.
- mattmillr 7y agoThere will still be non-air-conditioned subway cars in New York City this summer.
- dugmartin 7y agoI would think the open sewers and horse dung (and dead horses) would be much worse than the heat.
