"IBM uses Apple's compiler infrastructure for their big iron" is such a weird statement to make. Of all the open source projects Apple has sponsored, Clang and (especially) LLVM have to be the most impactful.
- wyldfire 7y agoIt's not accurate to call it "Apple's compiler infrastructure" IMO. They're one of several commercial sponsors/contributors.
- simonh 7y agoLLVM Sponsors. https://www.llvm.org/foundation/sponsors.html https://www.llvm.org/foundation/sponsors.html
- pdpi 7y agoApple hired Chris Lattner and built a team around him to work on LLVM, and have built it into the core of macOS (as a JIT for GPU code), and they started the Clang project. Clang/LLVM is the default C/C++ compiler for macOS (versus VCC in Windows and GCC in Linux). The project is not technically owned by Apple, but they are still the highest tier sponsors for the project, and are the one org with the most history with it. I don't think calling it "Apple's compiler infrastructure" is that unreasonable
- wyldfire 7y agoThey deserve credit for fostering its post UIUC flourish, sure. But I think it's inevitable that it would have been popular even without that support. > but they are still the highest tier sponsors for the project ... among the highest tier While the support of the foundation is valuable, I think the actual contributions should be weighted even heavier still. Apple contributes here, but so do lots and lots of others.
- Joky 7y agoThe fact that Apple basically bootstrapped the project 10 years ago does not mean it is forever “Apple’s compiler”. The community is much much larger than any single vendor out there.
- dralley 7y agoReally, not Webkit?
- pdpi 7y agoI'd call that a KDE project :)
- DannyB2 7y agoDuring the KDE 3 era, I heard a saying on slashdot: First comes the Navigator Then comes the Explorer Finally comes the Konqueror It is amusing that WebKit (forked by Apple from Konqueror browser) is now perhaps the dominant rendering engine for browsers, with Mozilla/Firefox being reborn from the ashes of Navigator.
