Ask HN: As an iOS developer... whats your biggest pain point?
Just curious to hear what fellow iOS (or any mobile platform) developers find to be the biggest pain point in creating applications.
This can be anywhere in the process from prototype to programming to submission to marketing to customer feedback.
- ddkrone 16y agoI can only comment on webOS and android since I haven't yet bought a mac to experiment with iOS. Compared to android webOS is a delight because it uses Javascript/HTML/CSS and any web developer can write a webOS app after a few simple tutorials to get acquainted with the APIs. So I'd say the biggest pain point on android is Java because from an architectural standpoint everything these days is MVC and android doesn't deviate from that.
- statictype 16y agoProvisioning profiles, distribution certificates and code signing. I have no clue about what's actually going on there and have not found any documentation explaining it either. I'm just cargo-culting the whole thing by following the instructions on the developer site.
- rdouble 16y agoThis has been my biggest pain point, also. However, the new process in XCode4 seems to have solved the problem.
- statictype 16y agoIs Xcode 4 even out? Or are you one of the beta testers or something?
- rdouble 16y agoIt's in beta. You should be able to download it if you're iOS dev subscription is current.
- kingofspain 16y agoAbsolutely this. I got by somehow and then had to re-guess my way through it all over again just recently. My other major pain is the app review process, mostly due to a short-tempered, impatient ex-boss I must add, but the waits can be horrendous. I can wait a week to be rejected over a 10 second fix that then takes a further week to get in. Alas, no one but Apple can help with this one. Oh - and one that hopefully doesn't apply to many others: we had a particularly vicious competitor who rallied his chums and gave our apps 1 star reviews. They even used their real names. That didn't help much!
- kgutteridge 16y agoAlmost definitely provisioning, though beta builder has made things a lot easier https://github.com/HunterHillegas/iOS-BetaBuilder https://github.com/HunterHillegas/iOS-BetaBuilder Changes to xcode breaking the apps plists on submission is perhaps the only other grumble.
- damoncali 16y agoThis may or may not exist already, but I'd like http://fakeapp.com http://fakeapp.com, but for use in the simulator, not a browser.
