Ofcourse you can validate input! Validation != Sanitation In this thread some people seem to confuse those. You can validate if all input characters are utf-8. But the moment you start to 'sanitize' non-utf-8 input into utf-8 you are in trouble. It's best to notify the user that the input validation failed and that you don't accept the input.
