I find it hilarious that RSA Security campaigned against the Clipper chip (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip#Backlash https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clipper_chip#Backlash) when they were subsequently found to also be compromised. Seems like open-source and peer review is the only way to ensure that crypto is not being hijacked.
