I had this exact thing happen to me as well, but wrote it off to having been compromised (fortunately I was only using Cloudflare as secondary DNS servers on a non-production account and am not using them as a registrar, so I only noticed months after the fact). I think a major reason going with someone like Cloudflare for DNS in the first place is reliability and availability and this does not speak to that. Zero communication in my case as well.
