It is reall sad to see an intelligent writer imply an opposition between capitalism and preventing environmental damage. Capitalism with correct accounting of environmental externalities and clear cost signals to polluters would work fine. Any command-economy solution opens many cans of worms.
I suspect that retroactive assignment of costs to polluters is in our future anyway, as the damage is also very time-shifted.
- jdkee 7y ago“ Capitalism with correct accounting of environmental externalities and clear cost signals to polluters would work fine.” Given the history of the past half century of regulatory capture of the U.S. government by corporate interests looking to pollute, e.g. the decontenting of the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the appointment of industry insiders to the leadership of the E.P.A. and the Dept. of the Interior under Reagan, Bush, Bush II, and Trump, this statement is Naïve at best and an outright lie at the worst. Take your polemics elsewhere.
