My neighbor, a colorectal surgeon and very into what he does, has remarked on several occasions that if single payer ever happens, he and most of the other surgeons he knows will likely walk away from the profession very shortly thereafter. There would be no financial or professional motivation to continue practicing.

- markroseman 7y agoBecause all the doctors in countries that have single payer are so horribly done by...?
- refurb 7y ago20-30% decrease in reimbursement will tick doctors off big time.
- jandrese 7y agoThis makes no sense. What is he going to do instead? Flip burgers? Go to Canada? Go to the UK? Go to Germany? If he wanted to make the argument that it would discourage people from seeking surgical degrees that is something worth discussing with current students, but that guy's costs are sunk. It's too late to change now.
- codegeek 7y agoTell your neighbor he is already been taken for a ride by insurance companies. It may actually be better for him once private insurance does not have a say in EVERYTHING he does as a doctor. He may even be able to make more money. Ask him is he really free today when seeing patients ? The answer is No. He has to listen to everything the insurance company approves.
- Ididntdothis 7y agoYes I am sure they will easily find another highly paying job. I call BS on that statement.
