I use Haiku which is a fast responding OS. Yet I was able to double the speed of the text search program by writing a custom version of GREP, however I also knew the type of searches I did and got rid of a lot of the matching options that were in the original code. Result a far faster program, but far less options available to the user. I think you will find many of the older systems that are faster are also more limited in what options they offer to the users.
