tcrowe is known to me for his past behaviour of harrasing lgbtq members of the node.js core development team and stalking them on social media. very unfortunate if he has schizophrenia but bigotry is not a symptom of it.
- mercer 7y agoWhy wouldn't it be? The salience of the topic, as well as the generally pro-inclusivity point of view in much of the IT world (as far as I can tell) would make it a prime topic of weird conspiracy theories to a brain that is prone to creating them. EDIT: also it's still fair enough to be critical about these things. schizophrenia is no 'excuse' in that sense. I'm not defending said theories at all, just saying that my experience with schizophrenics is that they are very much influenced by the topics that are relevant in their surroundings. It's easy to empathize with the mentally ill as long as they don't personally affect you and/or your high horses.
- newnewpdro 7y ago> very unfortunate if he has schizophrenia but bigotry is not a symptom of it Terry Davis, the late schizophrenic author of TempleOS, had a number of racist rants and other bigoted and hate-filled videos on YouTube.
- 1000units 7y agoHe was a gentle, troubled spirit that said the Gamer Word. Did he ever hurt or wrong anybody on racially motivated grounds? He jumped in front of a train after getting shadowbanned on Hacker News. Maybe you're the bad guy. --- Editing in reply to child comment, because I have been banned: Firstly, I thank you for clarifying that he did not literally leap into the train's path at the last moment, but rather sat calmly in front of it awaiting annihilation. This has much more gravitas and speaks well to our fallen brother HNer's character (one never stops being an HNer). Secondly, I feel that ostracizing him from this above-ground tech forum led him to the dangerous places you discuss.
- newnewpdro 7y ago> He was a gentle, troubled spirit that said the Gamer Word. Did he ever hurt or wrong anybody on racially motivated grounds? He jumped in front of a train after getting shadowbanned on Hacker News. Maybe you're the bad guy. He live-streamed using racial epithets against people of said race in public. If you think shadowbanning on HN is why Terry committed suicide, you weren't paying attention. He didn't jump in front of the train, he sat on the tracks and waited patiently with his back to it (there's video). What happened to Terry is a textbook example of why vulnerable people need to be supervised on the internet. Trolls posing as his fans had miniature drums sent to him while still living with his elderly parents, playing a significant part in his eventually becoming homeless. They spoofed fake love letters from an internet-famous woman he was clearly obsessed with to anyone watching his live-streams, who would then of course completely ignore his advances. Basically trolls actively messed with Terry, watching the consequences in real-time on his live-streams, as if it were a video game. Steadily pushing him further down a spiral of self-destruction, culminating in taking his own life. I'm saddened by what happened to Terry, and am confident he'd still be among the living had he never discovered YouTube. Live-streaming his daily life was his undoing.
- dang 7y agoPlease don't feed egregious comments by replying. This is in the site guidelines too: https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html.
- samfriedman 7y agoTime Cube could be another well-known example
- ndespres 7y agoI don't believe that tcrowe is the person who put this repo up. I do think tcrowe is posting in this thread as 1000units but that's just speculation.
- dang 7y agoPlease don't speculate like that on HN. It can't lead anywhere good.
- planetzero 7y ago..so a mentally ill person says mentally ill things online and you don't think it's related because it offends you?
- threatofrain 7y agoAre statements of prejudice so clearly associated with mental illness for you that’d you’d just label them mentally ill?
- planetzero 7y agoI'm not sure why you are equating a single person, who is clearly mentally ill, posting prejudice comments to all prejudice comments as being associated with mental illness. This is the biggest straw man argument I've heard today.
- threatofrain 7y agoI’m not sure why you’re talking about mental illness like a vague catch all term when talking about someone, nor why you’d dismiss a person with a statement like “mentally ill person says mentally ill things.” Research and clinical communities can better determine whether some classification occurs frequently with some symptom. Or were your HN comments meant to further those efforts?
- downerending 7y agoWe're far, far away from understanding all the ways that mental illness can manifest.
