I recently got to play with Lego because my daughter, who is five, got interested in it. There are attractive boxes for girls, it's called Lego Friends and the figures are a bit more life like.

There are attractive boxes for girls, it's called Lego Friends and the figures are a bit more life like. Nice! ;) If you need user-friendly CAD for creating digital Lego models (for planning builds before build it) try LeoCAD app with LDraw Parts Library.[0,1,2] [0] https://github.com/leozide/leocad/releases/tag/continuous https://github.com/leozide/leocad/releases/tag/continuous [1] https://www.leocad.org/ https://www.leocad.org/ [2] https://github.com/symbian9/awesome-ldraw https://github.com/symbian9/awesome-ldraw
- cerberusss 7y agoWow, looks good! Is there a way to order all the pieces of such a model?
- JoeSmithson 7y agoYou can upload the parts list to Bricklink. They have a feature that attempts to find the cheapest combination of sellers to minimize cost.
- app4soft 7y agoFor generate BrickLink Parts List[0] for created model using LeoCAD, in LeoCAD go to menu "File > Export > BrickLink..." and save its XML-file. Then you could use this XML-file for order all needed pieces.[1] [0] https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=207 https://www.bricklink.com/help.asp?helpID=207 [1] http://guidetobricklink.com/uploading-a-parts-list http://guidetobricklink.com/uploading-a-parts-list
- tomcatfish 7y agoI tried LeoCAD the other day and found it a nightmarish interface. I've been trying to convince a friend who enjoys building to find a cad program to make sets in, and Leo promised export functionality. We quickly ran into issues where parts do not automatically snap together and do not move correctly (a part required 1/4 offset and only 1/3 offsets are provided). When we exported our models to another Lego cad program, the new program tore our models apart, finding issues with almost every piece (due to them being partly inside each other or other things). My friend is an engineer who is very used to CAD software, but struggled immensely with the features provided in the package. This pains me because I was so excited about it being Open Source. Edit because my post sounded confrontational: I desperately would appreciate tips as to what we may have done wrong, our struggles in placing flowers on a baseplate compared to the models LeoCAD claims to have produced means we must have been messing up really bad.
- RobAley 7y ago> There are attractive boxes for girls My three daughters love the normal lego, they must have not realised it wasn't for people without penises.
- JoeSmithson 7y agoGendered sets and conflict sets is something that LEGO wrestled with a lot; they both run counter to the ideals/politics of the founder (and hence company). However, after investing heavily in research around it, they have basically come to the conclusion that; 1. Girls and boys play differently (as a rule of thumb, not universally obviously) 2. Conflict play is healthy (although they will probably never include contemporary weaponry/military). (your comment comes across needlessly agressive)
- RobAley 7y agoThe article you cite more or less backs my post : "But the decision matrix that ultimately influences widespread views on which toys are for which children includes inputs from parents, kids, and toy makers—adding up to a system that produces something of a feedback loop." I'm not at all criticizing Lego for making sets with female characters, pink colors, themes that revolve around friendship, leisure, domestic and emotional topics (for instance). These are good things, it is good to have ranges of toys in this vein to add variety and balance to the "normal" Lego ranges ("normal" was perhaps a bad choice of word in my first reply, "previous" or "non-Friends TM" might have been better). The comment was to point out that : > "There are attractive boxes for girls, it's called Lego Friends" is unnecessarily gendered and such language purpetuates this feedback loop which is a major influence on how girls and boys play. You have identified the outcome, not the cause.
- goto11 7y agoGood for them! But the "Friends" line have been enormously successful in getting more girls interested in Lego. For whatever reason, what you call "normal" Lego have primarily appealed to boys.
